Understanding how ranking points are calculated across freediving disciplines
The Freedive Ranking uses a standardized points system to compare performances across different freediving disciplines. Each discipline has a specific conversion rate that translates your performance into ranking points, allowing for fair comparison between depth, pool, and static disciplines.
The points calculation system is based on internationally recognized freediving standards and ensures that performances are weighted appropriately across different disciplines.
For depth disciplines, the conversion rate is 1 meter = 1 point
For pool dynamic disciplines, the conversion rate is 1 meter = 0.5 points
For static apnea, the conversion rate is 1 second = 0.2 points
The general formula for calculating points is:
Points = Performance Value × MultiplierWhere:
Your overall ranking is determined by the sum of your points across all disciplines you have competed in. Only your best performance in each discipline is considered for the ranking. Athletes who excel in multiple disciplines will naturally achieve higher overall rankings, reflecting their versatility and comprehensive freediving abilities.
Freediving competitions follow strict judging protocols. Cards and penalties affect your final results:
A red card results in a disqualified performance and awards 0 points for that attempt. Red cards are typically given for serious safety protocol violations or performance infractions.
If an athlete receives a yellow card, they most likely have applied penalty points that can affect the final results regardless of the distance or time achieved. These penalties are deducted from the announced performance before calculating ranking points, meaning your actual ranking points may be lower than the raw performance would suggest.
